About Daniel Back.

" I’ve always been a keen gardener and have always felt very connected to
nature, the landscape and our wider environment . My mother was an exceptional gardener and throughout my formative years, I spent many weekends gardening with her and clients of my own. Gardens and gardening has always held a special fascination for me."

While studying for a course in garden design at the Museum of Garden History in Lambeth, I decided to enhance my learning by engaging with the Garden Construction Co, who were building exceptional gardens for the internationally renowned designer Arne Maynard.

This period of hands-on, garden construction and creativity was a lightbulb moment for me, immersing myself in the practicality of building gardens that were designed with vision and a distinctive style.
Having completed my course in garden design, I was invited to join the team at Arne Maynard Garden Design and as project manager, was fortunate to work closely with Arne, a position which I thoroughly enjoyed for nearly a decade and was key to unlocking my creative career.

My current business, which I have built up over the last 15 years comprises of my design practice and a small gardening business in London, which services many of my clients who have engaged in the design and build process.
The mainstay of my business comes from recommendation and I will happily provide testimonials and consider new clients from any part of the country or abroad.

How I work.

Engaging with a garden designer isn’t always the most obvious route for people to take when they choose to make changes or improvements to their gardens, and for this reason I remain open-minded, when people first pick up the phone in order to discuss any potential work. Generally speaking, my design work can be divided into two possible routes.

  •  Providing purely a Design
  • Engaging with a Bespoke Package from design to construction/planting and the final result.

The process for both covers the following :

Initial meeting and consultation on site.

During this meeting, we would get to know each other and get to know
the garden and what the remit and expectations are?
I would talk through ideas take many pictures and gather information in order to produce a brief.

Bespoke package.

After the design is completed, and the presentation has been approved.
The project moves into the construction phase, the difference being a bespoke package, provides you with valuable support and overseeing/management which ultimately gives the client the most prestigious end result possible. This would include supplying all the living items including trees, topiary, shrubs, hedging, perennials, bulbs etc...

Brief.

This will be a descriptive summary of what was discussed on site. It will also include my working methods/terms and also have a quote for the design package.

If the brief and quote is approved we would move onto the designphase of the agreement. At this point, clients generally agree to either engage with a complete bespoke package, or simply just a design, which they can implement themselves without my involvement.

After care.

As mentioned before Daniel Back Garden Design is well equipped to provide a professional gardening service and consultation long after the project has been completed and we continue to assist clients with any changes or new ideas which inevitably come to light.
